Who We Are

PRESIDENT: Sandy has been in the asphalt testing business for over 25 years! She loves the job but has had to overcome preconceptions regarding women working in such a physical job. Every day has been an adventure. She calls on her military experience daily to overcome prejudices and thrive in this challenging career. She wants to encourage other women to join this rewarding vocation.

Personally, she is the wife of an asphalt tester, the mother of an Army soldier, a veteran volunteer, a Medieval recreationist, and a National Parks Geek. She loves road trips and living on the Colorado prairie! 

VICE PRESIDENT :  DENVER METRO   

Born and raised in Fort Morgan, Colorado. Graduated with an Associate of Science Degree from Front Range Community College. Currently living in Brighton, Colorado with my love, Pasquale, on his family’s farm.

Mother of 2 ,Grandmother of 11 and Great Grandmother of 2.

My hobbies include refurbishing violins and other string instruments and donating them to students interested in music. I also love treasure hunting for unique jewelry pieces.

I proudly served with the Colorado Department of Transportation for 20 years, beginning my career in Maintenance. I cross‑trained with the Region 6 Lab for six months, worked in the Physical Properties Unit in the Central Lab for a year and a half, and later moved into Construction and Inspection as an Engineering Science Tech II for five years. I then served nine years as a Head Tester in Region 6, now Region 1 Central Engineering. Throughout my CDOT career, I was assigned to the Central Engineering groups for CDOT and Local Agency units. I retired from CDOT at the end of July 2025.

In October 2025, I began a new chapter with HDR in Denver as a Senior Civil Inspector II, where I continue to build safe, efficient projects with dedicated teams across Colorado. Networking, mentoring, and supporting professional development remain among my biggest passions.

 VICE PRESIDENT :  SOUTHERN COLORADO Shawna is the

founding member of the Southern Colorado Branch. She has worked in male dominated industries her whole career and is an advocate for women in the construction industry. She strives to educate, support and

assist in the growth for women of all ages in our industries. She has 38 years of experience in all aspects of roadway construction, material lab operations, project management, business ownership and currently

holds a position with CDOT South Program Unit 2.

VICE PRESEDENT : NORTHERN COLORADO  

Anika is a native Coloradoan and earned her BS in Civil Engineering at the University of Colorado.

While there, she held several officer positions with the ASCE Student Chapter. She currently

works with the Field Services team at HDR, facilitating various construction management roles

for numerous clients in the transportation industry. In her spare time, she can be found training

with her dog in various sports and therapy work. She is excited to step into her new role as the

Northern Colorado Vice President of the Women of Asphalt.

VICE PRESIDENT : WESTERN COLORADO   Michelle has worked in the industry for seven years, starting as an intern for CDOT and moving to a very fulfilling early career with RockSol Consulting Group. She grew up in the heart of Colorado’s High Country, south of Steamboat Springs, and enjoy all outdoor activities, from fishing and hunting to hiking and camping. She attended CSU to obtain her bachelor’s in civil engineering and got her PE License in the state of Colorado two years ago. Michelle manages transportation construction projects and has had the immense pleasure to travel throughout the state on a multitude of projects. 

 SECRETARY: Erin has been a member of the WOA Colorado Chapter since its inception and is excited to

now serve on the board. With over 20 years of experience in the construction industry, she

has built a successful career in sales and marketing. Erin earned her business degree from the

University of Nebraska–Omaha and currently works as a Sales Representative for an asphalt

emulsions manufacturer Black Rock Material & Supply, a company of A-1 Chipseal. In her free

time, Erin enjoys the outdoors, including hunting and fishing with her husband and their two

energetic young boys.

TREASURER:  Having now spent half her life working, learning and growing with the amazing people within Asphalt industry, Abby cannot think of a better way to pay it forward than by joining the Women of Asphalt Colorado! She finds it an honor to serve as treasurer for the Colorado branch. When not with the WOA, Abby can be found managing projects for Martin Marietta in Northern Colorado or wandering the waters and woods with her family. 

EVENT CHAIR: Mary is currently the CDOT Region 1 – North Program Head Tester. She started her career in materials testing in 2007 with a private soil testing laboratory. Since then, she has expanded her knowledge to include field and laboratory testing of geosynthetics, aggregates, concrete and asphalt. She has been involved in multiple aspects of construction projects including project management and testing throughout the state but predominantly in the Denver Metro area. She is very happy to become a more active member in the WOA, as this organization has always been a group of welcoming and supportive women. When Mary is not working, she enjoys spending time with her wonderful husband and two daughters. She also loves live music, cooking, hiking with her beloved dog and cozying up on the couch with a good book. 

EVENTS CHAIR ASSISTANT: Tammy just celebrated 40 years in the industry.  She worked at CDOT for 30+ years & had a wonderful career. She retired in 2014 and has been working as a consultant for Yeh and Associates in their Denver office.  She has worked in a male dominated environment for her whole career.  She has been fortunate to have had some fantastic supervisors that were very supportive and encouraging. Yeh has been especially in favor of her being a part of the Women of Asphalt and bringing more women into the workforce. She started in 1982 when there were very few women in the industry. She has been the “first” or “only”  female in many positions, training classes, meetings, etc. Tammy’s happy place is the kitchen cooking, baking and creating new recipes.  She also loves to travel anywhere with her husband. 

 MARKETING CHAIR: Jo is the former Secretary of Women of Asphalt Colorado.  Jo has been working in the industry for almost 10 years and is now the publisher of
Colorado Public Works Journal. This is a publication providing a media platform for
the infrastructure industry in Colorado to showcase their work, demonstrate their
skills and keep on top of the latest news.
This media background, plus her sales, marketing and communication skills, makes
her an asset to the board of directors.
Having moved to Colorado from London, England Jo prefers the 300+ days of
sunshine here and being outside without an umbrella!

 TRAINING ACADEMY CHAIR: Andy is the chair of the training academy. He first found the passion for teaching at a young age and now splits his time being an adjunct faculty member at CSU Construction Management program, being a Construction Manager at RockSol, and leading training with the Women of Asphalt. Andy has been working in the industry since he was 17. He loves everything Colorado has to offer, and his wife says if you leave him next to a brick wall for 5 minutes, he could tell you it’s life story.  

GOLF CHAIR :  Megan has been an integral part of the Women of Asphalt CO serving first as our Social Media Chair and now taking on the Golf Chair! Megan has found it exciting getting to know people of various backgrounds in the industry! She first started in the construction field as an intern and continued after graduating from CSU in 2020. Currently she is an EIT/Construction Observer I at Yeh and Associates working on construction and geotechnical engineering projects throughout the Denver area. In her free time, she enjoys playing in kickball leagues with her friends, skiing, hiking, and traveling around the world!
